Alexandra
Alexandra- track 1
music and lyrics: Tracey Roberts © 2011

A solitary fisherman walked on the sand in the misty full moon light
He could see the women in the distance dancing by the waterside
As he got closer they ran to a pile of seal furs on the ground
And they grabbed it and ran in the water without… turning around…

In their hurry they left one fur behind so he gathered it and took it home
He hid it away inside his cottage wall, silent and alone
He went outside every night to see if he could see
The dancing women singing the songs of the selkies…

Late one night he heard a knock on his door and he opened it with surprise
And in front of him stood the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen before his eyes
She said “I’m looking for a seal fur coat that is very dear to me
I lost it many moons ago, foolishly…”

“I haven’t seen your coat” he said, “but please, come on inside,
You look cold and tired and hungry…” and she started to cry
“I can’t go back without my fur, it’s my home, my second skin ”
He said “Stay with me and I’ll take care of you”, she took his hand, as he led her in…

We are calling you Alexandra came the song from the sea
We will wait for you Alexandra
Shhha lah eee – ah, sha la-oh…..sha-lo …
you belong to me…

So she stayed there with the solitary fisherman, wistful and polite
But he never told her he had hidden her fur, secretly, that night
They married and had a family and lived together by the sea
And he tried to forget that his beautiful wife was a selkie…

Every night on a full moon she would go out to the shore
Listening for the song she knew but couldn’t hear it anymore
She watched her children growing up and swimming every day
But she never went in the water, she would turn and walk away

We are calling you Alexandra came the song from the sea
We will wait for you Alexandra
Shhha lah eee – ah, sha la-oh…..sha-lo …
you belong to me…

Instrumental…

The kids left home for busier lives as the fur quietly lay in wait
Alexandra stayed with the fisherman, resigned to her fate
One torrid night in a violent storm the cottage wall blew in
And there on the floor along with the rubble lay her precious seal coat skin

“Why did you never tell me?” she cried as she ran out to the sand
“I was selfish…” sobbed the fisherman and he held out his hand
“I love you but I hate that you denied me my rightful home…”
And she ran with her coat in the thundering waves….and she was gone…

We are calling you Alexandra came the song from the sea
We will wait for you Alexandra
Shhha lah eee – ah, sha la-oh…..sha-lo …
you belong to me… x2

And to this day the solitary fisherman walks out on the sand
Looking out to see if he can find her…
