Parallel Universe
Parallel Universe - track 3
music and lyrics: Tracey Roberts © 2005

In a parallel universe I might have sung on the mighty stage
In a blue velvet gown with an orchestra playing the songs that I wrote
I'd travel in aeroplanes frequenting diamond playgrounds of the world
And I'd pay for my friends to come frolic with me when I got bored

If I'd stayed with the boy that I fell in love with when I was eighteen
I'd be living a life as a frustrated housewife with toys on the floor
And raising four children, driving their taxi from here to there
Lunching with girlfriends discussing my kids and my ageing face

But I am what I am and I choose what I want
I know that there's no way of knowing what my life might have been
Had I made different choices then
But it is what it is and I have what I chose
And the reality is that I chose you

In a parallel universe I would still be living overseas
In a country of bicycles or snow covered mountains or tropical palms
I'd be marking the days in the 9 to 5 haze of a working girl
Till I had enough money to hitch-hike away with other travellers

If I'd married you years ago and thought about more carefully the shortness of life
Then I may have been able to offer you more than an only child
I'd have worked so much harder at focusing all of my energies
But I was blissfully happy to cruise and ignore the things that I need

But I am what I am and I choose what I want
I know there's no way of knowing what my life might have been
Had I made different choices then
But it is what it is and I have, I have what I chose
Oh my darling, the reality is that I chose you
